Church History
This church was organized in 1871. The building was completed in 1874, at a cost of $3,600, and was dedicated in 1875. After many years of Christian services the membership decreased until the church disbanded in 1942. The Norborne Commercial Club promptly bought the building and opened it for civic meetings for the public. The building was later demolished and the property was donated to the City and turned into a park called the Bell Park located at Elm and W. third streets. The City later sold the park in 2022.
St. John's Evangelical Church, was founded in 1897, by Charles Beck, August Schroeder and F. Theener. The congregational constitution was recorded in 1892 under the original name of Deutche Evangelische St. Johannes Germinde, but due to lack of membership, the congregation disbanded around the turn of the century. St. John's Evangelical Church was located at the West end of 2nd St. on the North West Corner.
The A.M.E. Church building was originally the St. John's Evangelical Church, founded in 1897. In 1915, the members of the A.M.E parish raised $400 and purchased the Evangelical building, to replace a small frame building located on the same spot where the present church now stands. The new building was moved from its location on West Second St. to the lot on Santa Fe St. The congregation later disbanded and the church is still standing on Santa Fe Street.
As early as the year 1840, Lutheran families had settled in this vicinity, and having no pastor of their own, they met in the different homes to sing Lutheran Hymns, read the Bible and have prayer. Later, they met in a log school house on the Earl White farm. Until a pastor, Rev. F. J. Biltz, came several years later, the reading services were conducted by a member. Mr. Albert Rueter served as "reader" for many years. By 1869, the little group felt themselves strong enough to organize a congregation and call a resident pastor to serve them. Rev. E. Lehmann, of St. Louis, accepted the first pastorate, and during his ministry, the church was erected in 1870. This church building later served as the school. The public school was organized and conducted in this building for a time by J. N. Cunningham. The Rev. J. H. Ehlers accepted the pastorate in 1886, and under his able leadership, a new house of worship was built in 1890. The church was recently renovated and celebrated its sesquicentennial.
The Missionary Baptist church was organized in October 1870, by five men and six women who had brought letters of dismissal from their churches. The Articles of Faith, known as the "New Hampshire Confession of Faith", were adopted by this group. Worship services were held in a two story frame building on the site of the present church, until 1905, when it was moved North across the street, and the present building was erected. Planning was begun on this building in 1904, but it was many years before it was completed.
The First Catholic Parish to be organized in Norborne was in October, 1878. The Church build was constructed of brick at a cost of four thousand dollars. Mass had been celebrated, however, at a little frame church on the grounds of the catholic cemetery in 1871, by a priest who travelled from Lexington. History also states, that Mass was offered in the railroad section house in 1868, and was the first religious service in the town of Norborne. The brick church was destroyed by fire in 1888, but work was begun immediately to rebuild and the church was completed that same year. The original bell was recast after the fire and is still in use. In 1929, the Sacred Heart Parish Hall was built, and was the center of many civic activities.
This denominational branch of Christians was organized in 1869. They had no building of their own in which to worship, so the Lutheran church offered the use of their new buildings. The first church was erected in 1872 at a cost of $2,500 and was dedicated in the fall of 1873 by Bishop E. M. Marvin. During the early years, the loyal members gave their time and money freely to the progress of the church. In 1900, the congregation had grown and they felt they should have a permanent brick building, replacing the original small frame church. The new church was erected in 1903 and dedicated in the summer of 1905. 1939 marked the anniversary of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and since that time the word "South" has been dropped. This union entailed very little change, but it did require the organization of the Woman's Society of Christian Service, which reaches into every department of a woman's life in the church.
